Ahead of their time by years in the PDA market, introducing the MagicLink in 1991, General Magic had solved some of the problems (with Telescript) that java is just beginning to come up against. But they wouldn't release their code to the Internet, as AT&T and Motorola wanted to own the wired and wireless networks, respectively. They also developed Portico (used by OnStar) and magicTalk.
